I teach in a Title 1 (at least 30% of students qualify for free lunch) school in central Texas. At least 10% of my students have parents who speak little or no academic English. These same parents do not show up to Meet The Teacher events or Parent Conferences most likely because they anticipate being unable to communicate with the teachers who don’t appear to be bilingual. When I found out that Seesaw messaging was instantly translated for parents, it was a game changer. I began messaging my students’ parents who fit the profile above, and I sent word home with my students to have their parents open the Seesaw message on their phones. It was AMAZING! I got responses back! That was 2 years ago. Ever since then, I have felt so much more a part of my students’ lives, being able to communicate freely and comment back and forth often about my students’ posts with their Spanish-speaking parents. Heart melted.
